ZEMU: Classic H1Z1 King of the Kill Nears Release as Closed Playtesting Continues

Remember dropping into H1Z1, scrambling for a weapon and trying to land that perfect two-tap? ZEMU is bringing that era back, with streamers and regular players currently taking part in closed playtesting ahead of an imminent public release.

The community project focuses on the original 2017 Preseason 3 version of H1Z1: King of the Kill, giving returning players a reason to keep their eyes on one of battle royale's most fondly remembered games.

What is ZEMU?

According to the development team, ZEMU is a reverse-engineered project targeting the January–March 2017 Preseason 3 build. Its priority is preserving that version's mechanics and making the original client playable again.

This is a community fan project, independent of Daybreak. The aim is to revisit a specific chapter of H1Z1's history, with fixes to support the experience.

Reverse-engineered servers and improved code

ZEMU brings the original client back through reverse-engineered server technology. The work also includes improvements to the code supporting the experience.

In its August developer update, the team announced a move from TypeScript and Node.js to C#, targeting better stability, server performance and more room for future optimisation. It predicted the C# server could run roughly 180–250% faster than its Node.js setup; that is a developer estimate, rather than a verified performance result.

The goal is to preserve the classic gameplay while improving the technology running behind it.

Closed playtesting is already underway

The project is currently in closed playtesting, with a mix of streamers and regular players getting hands-on with the game. Public release is expected imminently, although the announcements linked below do not specify a launch date.

In an announcement posted on 3 October 2026, ZEMU subreddit staff said access to the test builds was expanding throughout the following week. Players are being brought in gradually to help populate lobbies and identify bugs.

Interested players can follow the access-request instructions in the test access announcement. Access remains subject to approval, so downloading the launcher does not automatically mean you can join a match.

Is ZEMU the same as H1Emu or RoTK?

The names can get confusing. In its September clarification, the ZEMU team describes its focus as 2017 Preseason 3, distinguishes H1Emu's Just Survive and 2016 King of the Kill work, and states that ZEMU is not affiliated with RoTK.

For anyone specifically looking to revisit the original Preseason 3 client, that distinction matters.

The launcher is available to download, but joining the current closed playtest still requires approved access. Check Discord for the latest announcements and release information.

For longtime King of the Kill players, the appeal is easy to understand: another chance to revisit the game that kept them chasing one more match. How closely ZEMU delivers that experience will be something to watch as testing progresses.
