But, according to Marathon creative director Julia Nardin, that\u2019s untrue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs someone who\u2019s worked on both Destiny and Marathon, I can confirm that the \u201cleak\u201d about us merging the two IPs is fake,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/julianardin\/status\/2100269826707268060\">Nardin said<\/a> in a post on Twitter \/ X. \u201cThey share a lot of the same Bungie DNA, but like siblings they\u2019re also their own independent entities. Please don\u2019t believe everything you read online.\u201d<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"ignvideo\" data-slug=\"marathon-official-sentinel-shell-cinematic-trailer\" data-loop=\"\"><\/section>\n<p>It has of course been a tumultuous time for Bungie, Destiny, and Marathon. Marathon began life as an ultra hardcore extraction shooter, but Bungie has been retooling it to play more like Destiny since as the game has struggled for players. Meanwhile, Bungie stopped work on Destiny 2 to focus on Marathon \u2014 upsetting Destiny fans in the process. Livestreams from Bungie parent company Sony Interactive Entertainment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/people-are-spamming-sonys-state-of-play-chat-with-destiny-3-requests\">have been overrun by calls for Bungie to return to the world of Destiny<\/a>, either to continue with Destiny 2 or work on Destiny 3.<\/p>\n<p>This week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/marathon-delays-next-major-update-puts-focus-on-pve-and-moves-away-from-seasonal-content-amidst-bungie-struggles\">Bungie announced a move away from seasonal content<\/a>, a focus on PvE, and a significant delay for Marathon\u2019s next update. It was slated to release on September 22, but will now arrive on December 8. A further significant update will be released in March. On October 6, Marathon will get a smaller update that resets progression and the in-game economy to prepare for an overhaul.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MarathonDevTeam\/status\/2100356057562599707\">social media follow-up<\/a>, Bungie clarified that the December and March updates are free, not paid DLC. \u201cIf you own Marathon, the December and March updates will be available at no additional cost,\u201d the studio said. \u201cThat includes gameplay content such as new zones, weapons, and Runners.\u201d<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"slideshow\" data-slug=\"the-100-best-playstation-games-of-all-time\" data-value=\"the-100-best-playstation-games-of-all-time\" data-type=\"slug\" data-caption=\"\"><\/section>\n<p>Which begs the question: why issue this clarification? Some believe it suggests a move to free-to-play supported by paid expansions, and these updates should not be confused with expansion-type content. However, Bungie hasn&#8217;t announced any expansions for Marathon. Perhaps the plan is for different editions of Marathon, some paid, that would sit alongside a free offering. These might offer different tiers of content, allowing players to pick and choose.<\/p>\n<p>The spectre in all this is of course Sony\u2019s ongoing commitment to Marathon. It backed the game publicly, but some fans are worried about its future.
