We got the chance to speak with the developers of the new StarCraft game, who explained why they shared such a distant release date and even teased some potential gameplay elements for this highly-anticipated title.<\/p>\n

StarCraft is finally getting a new game, and it\u2019s taking a drastically different approach from its predecessors; instead of an RTS, Blizzard\u2019s grisly sci-fi property is making its debut in the realm of open-world shooters, and it\u2019s set to launch in 2030.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a long way out from now, and it\u2019s anyone\u2019s guess as to what the world will look like in four years. We got the chance to ask the developers everyone\u2019s burning question at Blizzcon 2026: Why announce the game if there\u2019s still so much time left before it releases?<\/p>\n

Dan Hay, GM & VP of StarCraft and AnaLee Haertling, Associate Director, told us that sharing a firm release date helps keep them \u201chonest\u201d \u2014 and yes, 2030 is a firm release date.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou walk a funny line, because it\u2019s like, you wanna tease, and we wanna say, \u2018Hey, this is where we wanna land,\u2019\u201d Hay explained. \u201cThe reason why I love a really good date, is because the reality is that it puts a target. It allows us to say to a team that that\u2019s what we\u2019re going for. It\u2019s a rallying cry, and we\u2019re focused on that. We wanna make sure we deliver something that is fun, something that is powerful, and something that allows you to explore. But I also like the idea that there\u2019s a frame that keeps us honest. And it says, \u20182030, let\u2019s go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if 2030 was a solid date, Hay confirmed that it is, indeed, \u201csolid.\u201d<\/p>\n

“I like the idea that there’s a frame that keeps us honest.”<\/section>\n

While Hay couldn\u2019t tell us how long the game has been in development, he did share some insight into how hard the team is working to transform StarCraft into a world that feels like a living, breathing universe that\u2019s both welcoming to new players and recognizable to longtime fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t tell you how long it\u2019s been in development with the team, but I can tell you how long it\u2019s been in development in my head, and it\u2019s probably about 25 years,\u201d he joked. \u201cFor us, I think what\u2019s important is that we’ve gone out to find people who really love the brand. We\u2019ve gone out to people who know the brand, who come back and really feel the love of the legacy. We\u2019ve taken great pains and great care to make something that feels authentic, that when you walk through this world, you recognize it. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s a tricky thing. It\u2019s a bit of a knife\u2019s edge. You wanna build something that is welcoming and inviting to new players but you wanna make sure it feels real. That when you walk into a bar it feels like a bar from the original world. When you meet players and characters and you see them, they’ve got the weapons and the armor and it feels authentic and it feels real.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hay went on to drop a few subtle hints at what players can expect in this new game, saying that StarCraft will bring into sharp focus the rough edges of its world, along with the visceral feeling of being a soldier fighting against massive, deadly creatures.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanna show that it\u2019s rough tools out there, it’s a difficult world, it’s filled with warfare and different factions and different groups of people, and they don\u2019t always get along, and we wanted to bring that to bear from the very beginning,\u201d he told us.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you think about what StarCraft will allow you to do, and we thought about how we tell this story \u2014 this is the way to tell that story. To be boots on the ground, to be down in the muck and the dirt, and to feel the tension of it. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere was something really powerful \u2014 and I have to be careful not to give too much away here \u2014 I remember seeing the first time that a Hydralisk was 10 feet tall, and it was basically snapping at me. And I\u2019ve got a gun and I\u2019ve got armor, and I\u2019m feeling like I\u2019m down in the dirt and I\u2019m feeling the weight of it. Emily was just talking about the deployment of the barracks. What\u2019s super powerful about it is the moment you drop down on the ground, your perspective changes. It doesn\u2019t feel like you\u2019re a god looking down at this and you\u2019re detached. It feels like, \u2018My God, I’m in the middle of this. Every decision matters. Everything I do feels like it has gravitas.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He also dove into why Blizzard chose to take StarCraft in such a wildly different direction, rather than staying with the series\u2019 RTS roots \u2014 and in doing so, shed some light on a few possible key gameplay elements, one of which is using an enemy as a \u201ctool\u201d against another enemy.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us, when we think about the themes and we think about the opportunity for you to be on the battlefield and for you to go out and think about the vista, the opportunity to explore, and then to discover, and then to disrupt. It\u2019s incredibly unique. And then when you think about the different factions that there are, we just wanted people to go out into these worlds and actually get a sense of what it\u2019s like to meet these different groups. <\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, I really wanna talk about this stuff, but I also have to hold some stuff back, but what’s really important is you think about some of these different factions in StarCraft, and you think about what they bring and you think about the way that it feels. I have imagery in my head right now that I can be careful not to describe, but I\u2019m seeing an awful lot of biomass, and I\u2019m seeing a lot of stuff we were hinting at. If you look at the teaser and you start to see that moment where the barracks is flying in and you look at the planet, you\u2019ll actually see all the things that are alive on that planet and get a sense of that feel.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us, it felt right to put you down on the ground in the middle of people that are fighting and they don\u2019t agree. This feeling of, \u2018The enemy of my enemy is a tool to be used.\u2019 We felt like the open world and the opportunity to explore and to discover and of course to disrupt and to use my enemy against another enemy felt really powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n
