Developer FromSoftware is gearing up for The Duskbloods<\/a> with a network test and a recent hands-on preview that I got to take part in. Coming off of its most recent game Elden Ring: Nightreign<\/a>, which is a co-operative multiplayer experience, and now the upcoming PvPvE with The Duskbloods, you might be wondering if the studio has another single-player game lined up. Rest assured, FromSoft isn’t putting all its eggs into the multiplayer basket.<\/p>\n

As part of an interview I had with FromSoftware president and The Duskbloods director Hidetaka Miyazaki<\/a>, I asked if doing back-to-back multiplayer games was indicative of the direction the team is going. He reassured us that FromSoftware is not done making single-player games.<\/p>\n

<\/section>\n

“It’s not necessarily some big reveal saying this is the direction we plan to go in moving forward. We still have a heavy focus on single-player content as well. This is just something that happened to work out the way it did,” Miyazaki told me. “It’s funny because there was never really any big plan that these two games would both release next to each other.”<\/p>\n

He explained that he and the team have had a lot ideas pile up over the years and he saw The Duskbloods, which is heavily influenced by board games and TTRPGs when it comes to gameplay mechanics, as an opportunity to try those out. “These things seemed like great ideas but didn’t really fit the context of a single-player game,” Miyazaki explained.<\/p>\n

Miyazaki talked about how this is the kind of game he wants to see exist and made something he himself would want to play. “Personally, it’s very fun to make a multiplayer game like this. It’s not something we’ve done a lot and we’re looking forward to seeing players’ reactions and getting feedback,” he said. <\/p>\n

He concluded by telling me, “If anything, it’s like the more you work on something multiplayer for a long time it scratches that itch only to want to make something single-player again.”<\/p>\n

The future of FromSoftware and the question of whether it will release a sequel to Elden Ring or Bloodborne is a hot topic, after the boss of parent company Kadokawa survived a recent shareholder vote on his future<\/a> amid increasing pressure from an activist investor who believes the company has failed to capitalize on Elden Ring\u2019s enormous success. The 30 million-selling Elden Ring launched in 2022, and since then FromSoftware has released expansion Shadow of the Erdtree (2024) and multiplayer spinoff, Elden Ring: Nightreign (2025).<\/p>\n

<\/section>\n

In June, Miyazaki commented on the shareholder pressure Kadokawa was under<\/a>. Reassuring fans, he insisted that FromSoftware can still \u201cfreely make the kind of games we want to make without excessive interference.” Could Elden Ring 2 be on the cards? In December 2024, Miyazaki said FromSoftware was not considering making Elden Ring 2<\/a>, but wouldn’t shut down the possibility in the future. If not, there is an Elden Ring movie<\/a> in the works.<\/p>\n
