Sony held its planned Phantom Blade Zero<\/a> State of Play livestream with \u2014 somewhat surprisingly \u2014 the comments turned on, and they went exactly how everyone thought they would.<\/p>\n

The YouTube chat, for example, was dominated by \u201cno disc no buy\u201d comments, which drowned out comments about the promising looking action game itself. It was a similar situation on Twitch.<\/p>\n

None of this should come as a surprise, given fans had called out this first State of Play<\/a> since Sony\u2019s announcement sent shockwaves through the video game industry as a likely battleground for the ongoing backlash to the impending end of PlayStation disc production from 2028.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill buy when it’s available PHYSICALLY,\u201d read one comment. \u201cWow! It may look great but it will look better on a disc! So make that happen and keep happening,\u201d said another. \u201cDoes Donnie Yen come on disc?\u201d joked one person.<\/p>\n

Phantom Blade Zero is just the latest game to find itself drowned out by the no disc backlash, despite it and its developer, S-Game, having nothing to do with it. Gamers have continued to call on Sony to U-turn on its decision, signing online petitions and swarming over PlayStation social media posts to express concern about video game preservation and ownership. Complaints have also come from other groups. The UK\u2019s Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA), for example, called Sony\u2019s decision \u201ca triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, backers of physical media have called on gamers to boycott PlayStation for a week in August<\/a> to send a message to Sony that its decision to kill discs is unacceptable. The Does it play? X \/ Twitter account<\/a>, which is a fierce critic of Sony\u2019s plan to do away with physical media, issued a call to arms that has been viewed on the social media platform over 2 million times.<\/p>\n

\u201cSony wants to abandon fans? Let’s give them a small taste of their own medicine!\u201d the X \/ Twitter account said. \u201cTogether with other creators we call for a 1 week #PSBlackout in August. No logins, no play sessions, no purchases on any of Sony’s platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n
