The Bubble Head Nurses from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/games\/silent-hill-2-2001\"><u>Silent Hill 2<\/u><\/a>, Pyramid Head, and many other creatures from the first three games in the series were borne at least in part from his creative vision, birthing monsters that have remained staples in the genre to this day.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2019, Ito opened up about one of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resetera.com\/threads\/madonna-was-one-of-the-influences-of-silent-hill-2s-atmosphere.108016\/\"><u>inspirations<\/u><\/a> for the nurses\u2019 movements in the Silent Hill franchise, citing the dancers in Madonna\u2019s 1999 music video for \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cAVx9RKaLPU\"><u>Nothing Really Matters<\/u><\/a>.\u2019 In the video, Madonna and her backup dancers used <a href=\"https:\/\/ums.org\/2019\/10\/17\/butoh-explained\/\"><u>Butoh-style dance<\/u><\/a> movements, a type of Japanese choreography that emerged after World War II characterized by slow, controlled motions, white, full-body makeup, and contorting one\u2019s face and body into absurd and grotesque expressions.<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"slideshow\" data-slug=\"silent-hill-2-remake-gameplay-screenshots\" data-value=\"silent-hill-2-remake-gameplay-screenshots\" data-type=\"slug\" data-caption=\"\"><\/section>\n<p>Silent Hill\u2019s nurses move in a similar way, so it\u2019s not hard to see where he drew his influence from. Years later, however, this factoid is getting some flak from Madonna fans after he revealed that he isn\u2019t actually into her music.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2026, a fan credited Madonna for \u201cliterally being the inspiration for the atmosphere of Silent Hill 2\u201d \u2014 but Ito didn\u2019t necessarily agree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I [was] inspired by Madonna&#8217;s Nothing Really Matters video,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/adsk4\/status\/2057430986598793621?s=20\"><u>clarified<\/u><\/a>. \u201cBut I meant the Butoh-like dances by Asian dancers painted entirely white in the video, not herself \/ her song. It was one of [the] inspirations for the Lying Figure, Bubblehead Nurses\u2019 etc. animations. That&#8217;s all. A vocal segment of Madonna\u2019s fanbase came out of the woodwork to criticize this particular statement, seemingly under the impression that he was hating on the iconic singer and trying to distance his work from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original post said the music video? So why are you being shady? Madonna\u2019s concept of the video is the reason WHY you were inspired,\u201d one <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/andre_marcs\/status\/2057449094097056195?s=20\"><u>argued<\/u><\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, you were inspired by the video? i don\u2019t understand the difference and big deal and the hate that\u2019s being sent to the original poster for being excited that you said an aspect of Madonna\u2019s video inspired Silent Hill, which u just confirmed it did\u2026\u201d another <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Feebux\/status\/2057445136460587227?s=20\"><u>wrote<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"ignvideo\" data-slug=\"silent-hill-2-is-utterly-miserable-and-thats-why-its-great\" data-loop=\"\"><\/section>\n<p>Still others informed Ito that the original poster was most likely being <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MomentsB4Wind\/status\/2057441829612663102?s=20\"><u>hyperbolic<\/u><\/a> and humorous, with their post probably getting misinterpreted by him \u2014 but either way, Ito <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/adsk4\/status\/2057442105174393240?s=20\"><u>said<\/u><\/a> he was still facing fierce backlash due to his clarification on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been over two months since then, and the criticism hasn\u2019t completely died down.
