{"id":12734,"date":"2026-04-06T23:38:39","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T23:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nextlevelnews.co.uk\/blog\/2026\/04\/06\/we-moved-away-from-that-baby-face-overwatch-reveals-updated-look-for-anran-following-fan-backlash\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T23:38:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T23:38:39","slug":"we-moved-away-from-that-baby-face-overwatch-reveals-updated-look-for-anran-following-fan-backlash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nextlevelnews.co.uk\/blog\/2026\/04\/06\/we-moved-away-from-that-baby-face-overwatch-reveals-updated-look-for-anran-following-fan-backlash\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We Moved Away From That Baby Face\u2019 \u2014 Overwatch Reveals Updated Look For Anran Following Fan Backlash"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"article-page\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2026\/02\/05\/season1thumb-1770317359539.png\" \/>\n<section data-transform=\"mobile-ad-break\"><\/section>\n<p>Overwatch has unveiled an updated look for one of its newest heroes, Anran, following criticism of how her face previously looked in-game.<\/p>\n<p>The redesign has happened following an initial backlash from the community and the voice actor who portrays the fire fan-wielding damage dealer, Fareeha, who claimed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/this-is-a-hill-worth-dying-on-overwatch-actor-supports-potential-redesign-of-criticized-character\"><u>\u201cthis was a hill worth dying on\u201d<\/u><\/a> after it was suggested that Anran was yet another victim of Overwatch\u2019s \u201cSame Face Syndrome\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This syndrome is the suggestion that many of the female heroes in Overwatch suffer from the fact that they all have basically the exact same facial features, whether that be the Swedish Brigitte, British Tracer, Japanese Kiriko, Martian Juno, or, up until now, Chinese Anran.<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"ignvideo\" data-slug=\"overwatch-official-season-1-conquest-trailer\" data-loop=\"\"><\/section>\n<p>Back in February, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/we-agree-that-she-can-be-even-better-overwatch-director-responds-after-voice-actor-and-fans-say-changes-are-needed-to-new-character-anran\"><u>Blizzard revealed that plans were underway for a rethink<\/u><\/a> when it came to Anran\u2019s appearance, stating that \u201cwe agree that she can be even better\u201d. Well, now we\u2019ve finally got a look at the result of those tweaks.<\/p>\n<p>In a video posted on Overwatch\u2019s social media, game director Aaron Keller says, \u201cI wanted to take a moment to share the updated version of Anran\u2019s in-game look. We want our heroes to feel unique, but we also want their visuals to match their personality, and we feel like we didn\u2019t quite land that when Anran first released.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think she could come across older and that her original version was too innocent and playful\u201d, Keller continued. \u201cAnran is confident, determined, fierce, and a natural-born leader, and we want her visuals in game to convey that personality. So we made some adjustments to her face. We focused on her eyes, eyebrows, and mouth, and we moved away from that baby face, look, and expression to something more sincere and more mature, and even something like a simple posture change can help Anran feel, well, more like Anran!\u201d We\u2019re really happy with the way these changes turned out, and also that she has a closer resemblance to her brother Wuyang.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In Season 2, we\u2019re introducing an updated look for Anran. She didn\u2019t fully land as the fiery and fierce sister of Wuyang that we hoped she would. With this update, our team focused on strengthening her overall presence. <\/p>\n<p>This evolution reflects both our creative intent and the\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1AwaVDuzdo\">pic.twitter.com\/1AwaVDuzdo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Overwatch (@PlayOverwatch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PlayOverwatch\/status\/2041290205659861214?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 6, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe have five more heroes coming in this year, and we want all of them to feel true to who they are,\u201d explains Keller. \u201cGoing through this process has really helped the team dial in this next set of heroes. So please, keep sharing your thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a reply to the official game\u2019s account, Keller added, \u201cWe&#8217;re really happy with the way Anran&#8217;s personality is coming through with these changes. And personally, I&#8217;m encouraged by what the team can accomplish when players advocate for our game!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In turn, Anran&#8217;s performer, Fareeha, quoted the above video and posted, &#8220;So grateful for this update, she looks much more like the strong older sibling we knew her to be! For all of the details on them, make sure to come back to IGN.<\/p>\n<p>Overwatch has seen somewhat of a resurgence recently, following the announcement that the game was dropping its &#8220;2&#8221; and adding 10 new heroes in future.
