Most notably, Generations featured new wrinkles to customization and combat through Hunting Styles and Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Generations later received an enhanced edition, known as Monster Hunter Generations XX in Japan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/2018\/08\/28\/monster-hunter-generations-ultimate-review\"><u>Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate<\/u><\/a> internationally. With 27 million copies sold, it\u2019s the series\u2019 (and Capcom\u2019s) best-selling game, and with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/monster-hunter-world\/\"><u>Metascore<\/u><\/a> of 90, it\u2019s also the series\u2019 best-reviewed game.<\/p>\n<p>With World, Capcom moved the primary development of Monster Hunter back to home consoles, specifically PS4 and Xbox One. For the first time, it made a concerted effort to reach a wider Western audience by moving to a more seamless open-world design, reducing the learning curve of the series\u2019 intricate systems, fully supporting online play with global servers, and releasing simultaneously across all regions.<\/p>\n<p>A massive expansion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/2019\/09\/04\/monster-hunter-world-iceborne-review\"><u>Monster Hunter World: Iceborne<\/u><\/a>, was released the following year. Similar to the Ultimate versions of past games, Iceborne added new monsters and mechanics to the base game, as well as an all-new story that rivals the size of the campaign in World.<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"object-card\" data-id=\"c58be371-b00c-42d9-90fa-3f7925559621\"><\/section>\n<h3>Monster Hunter Rise (2021)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2025\/01\/30\/mhrise-1738272378257.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2025\/01\/30\/mhrise-1738272378257.jpg\" class=\"article-image-full-size\" title=\"undefined\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/monster-hunter-rise-review\"><u>Monster Hunter Rise<\/u><\/a> is the series\u2019 second best-performing game, ranking only behind World in terms of sales and Metascore. As the subtitle \u2018World\u2019 denotes the previous game\u2019s more global approach, \u2018Rise\u2019 indicates a greater focus on verticality, a design decision supported by the introduction of the Wirebug, a new mechanic that enabled wall-climbing and overall more fluid traversal.<\/p>\n<p>Rise builds off of the previous Switch entry, Generations Ultimate, as much as it does World, given World and Rise were, for a time, being developed in tandem. As stated in our review, \u201cmuch of the streamlining World did has been carried forward\u201d in Rise, while \u201cother things like separate Village and Hub questlines for single- and multiplayer and the ability to tweak a weapon\u2019s playstyle a bit return from older Monster Hunter games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/monster-hunter-rise-sunbreak-review\"><u>Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak<\/u><\/a> was released the following year. Stories 2 again lets you fight alongside monsters (aka Monsties) instead of strictly hunting them, creating a party system that should be familiar to anyone who\u2019s played a Pokemon RPG.<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"object-card\" data-id=\"ed0e064b-9951-48eb-af1d-f8a41db91276\"><\/section>\n<h3>Monster Hunter Wilds (2025)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2025\/01\/30\/mhwilds-1738272378258.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2025\/01\/30\/mhwilds-1738272378258.jpg\" class=\"article-image-full-size\" title=\"undefined\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Monster Hunter Wilds is the latest game in the series, released on February 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Wilds is a mainline Monster Hunter game that builds on the design principles of World and Rise. It boasts \u201cdynamic, ever-changing environments\u201d and the series\u2019 \u201cmost evolved action and improved immersion,\u201d according to Capcom.<\/p>\n<p>As noted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/monster-hunter-wilds-review\">IGN&#8217;s review<\/a>, &#8220;Monster Hunter Wilds continues to smooth off the traditionally rough edges of the series in smart ways, reducing as much friction as possible that could get in the way of you grabbing any of its exceptionally fun weapons and planting them firmly in a monster\u2019s hide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"object-card\" data-id=\"a3678790-d22f-4413-a5c4-e3e251a7ef39\"><\/section>\n<h2>Upcoming Monster Hunter Games<\/h2>\n<section data-transform=\"ignvideo\" data-slug=\"monster-hunter-stories-3-twisted-reflection-official-announce-trailer-nintendo-direct-2025\" data-loop=\"\"><\/section>\n<p>The newest addition to the franchise is the aforementioned Monster Hunter Wilds. In terms of future releases, Capcom is also working alongside TiMi Studio Group (Call of Duty Mobile, Pokemon Unite) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/games\/monster-hunter-outlanders\"><u>Monster Hunter Outlanders<\/u><\/a>, a free-to-play mobile game with multiplayer hunters and \u201ca massive open world.\u201d No release window has been announced.<\/p>\n<p>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/nintendo-direct-partner-showcase-july-2025-everything-announced\">most recent Nintendo Direct<\/a>, Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection was announced as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/monster-hunter-stories-3-twisted-reflection-is-flying-toward-nintendo-switch-2-next-year\">upcoming game for the Nintendo Switch 2<\/a> as well as Xbox, PC, and PS5.
