That seemingly innocuous fact was big news after the price of the upcoming looter shooter was thrust into the headlines when Gearbox development chief Randy Pitchford sparked a backlash with a series of controversial tweets.<\/p>\n<p>The outspoken Pitchford <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/as-gamers-express-concern-about-borderlands-4-potentially-costing-80-gearbox-chief-randy-pitchford-says-if-youre-a-real-fan-youll-find-a-way-to-make-it-happen\">had responded to a fan who had expressed concern about the prospect of paying $80 for Borderlands 4<\/a>, saying: \u201cif you\u2019re a real fan, you\u2019ll find a way to make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A) Not my call. B) If you\u2019re a real fan, you\u2019ll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Randy Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DuvalMagic\/status\/1922454876803551555?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 14, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/borderlands-4-boss-randy-pitchford-addresses-real-fans-tweet-controversy-nobody-likes-being-taken-for-granted-and-it-was-not-my-intent\">Pitchford ended up having to address the negativity surrounding his comments<\/a>, which some suggested might have harmed Borderlands 4\u2019s chances of success. But this was hardly the latest drama revolving around Randy Pitchford, who often gives the press plenty to talk about whenever he addresses hot topics within the video game industry.<\/p>\n<p>So, in an interview with Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Gearbox parent company Take-Two, ahead of the company\u2019s latest (and impressive) financial results, I asked whether he has a mini heart attack whenever Pitchford tweets anything.<\/p>\n<p>In his response, Zelnick admitted Pitchford can be a controversial figure, and even suggested some of his antics are deliberate, but ultimately he\u2019s a big fan.<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"image-with-caption\" data-image-url=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2025\/08\/08\/rp-1754659719231.jpg\" data-image-title=\"null\" data-image-class=\"article-image-full-size\" data-image-link=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2025\/08\/08\/rp-1754659719231.jpg\" data-caption=\"Randy%20Pitchford%20has%20said%20%26%2339%3Breal%20fans%26%2339%3B%20will%20find%20a%20way%20to%20pay%20%2480%20for%20Borderlands%204.%20Photo%20by%20Jon%20Kopaloff%2FGetty%20Images%20for%20Lionsgate.\"><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<p>\u201cI love Randy, first of all. Let me just say that on the record,\u201d Zelnick began. \u201cAnd I love his big personality. I love his passion and he is one of the all time great game makers. He also can be controversial at times \u2014 sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally. I still love him to death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some had expected Take-Two to follow Nintendo\u2019s (and at that time, Microsoft\u2019s) lead and make the jump to $80 for Borderlands 4, which it\u2019s now decided will hold the line at $70. I asked Zelnick why that was the right decision for the looter shooter, and his response was along similar lines to his answer to 2K\u2019s Mafia: The Old Country being set at $50.<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"ignvideo\" data-slug=\"borderlands-4-official-amon-abilities-breakdown-beyond-the-borderlands-7\" data-loop=\"\"><\/section>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve always engaged in variable pricing and we really want to make sure that the consumer&#8217;s experience of the title is that Borderlands 4 is a great, great game, which we believe it is, and that we&#8217;re offering a terrific value at the same time,\u201d Zelnick said.<\/p>\n<p>Zelnick has used this sort of response to answer questions about GTA 6\u2019s price (some believe it will be $80, some as high as $100). \u201cWe always want to make sure that we deliver way more value than whatever we charge consumers, because we think of the consumer&#8217;s experience as an intersection of the thing itself and what you paid for it,\u201d Zelnick said, talking generally of Take-Two\u2019s strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we just want to make sure we&#8217;re always delivering way more value than whatever we charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"divider\"><\/section>\n<p><em>Wesley is Director, News at IGN.
